The mountains outside of Cooke City in Yellowstone National Park and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness tend to have the deepest snowpack and some of the most inspiring backcountry ski terrain. It’s well worth the effort to travel to this part of the state for an unforgettable journey – where the road literally ends just a few miles past the park entrance! Here you and your MAG guide have this magnificent winter landscape all to yourself. Whether you are looking for powder turns in alpine meadows or challenging peak descents, MAG customizes your trip to meet your goals and abilities.

  • Montana Alpine Guides (MAG) offers guided backcountry powder skiing in the Silver Gate–Cooke City area of Yellowstone National Park. With a minimum of two days for these trips, it’s highly likely that you ski some of the best powder of your life during that time! With reliable snowfall from December through May, this area is renowned for its spectacular backcountry ski options for all levels of experience. All MAG guides are American Avalanche Association members, have professional avalanche training and medical training, and many have AMGA certification in addition to years of first-hand experience in our local terrain.

    If you do not have your own alpine touring skis, telemark skis, or splitboard, our equipment list contains information on local rental options!

    Avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe) and backpack may be rented from MAG for $50/day. Rentals must be coordinated in advance as our inventory is limited.

    *Rental gear should be picked up the night prior to your outing, to ensure it is ready for your trip.

TRIP DURATION

2 days minimum. All trips are custom to fit your group – you decide when to meet your guide and when you want to turn around. We plan the ski tour around your preferences!
