Crevasse Rescue

EDUCATIONAL COURSE

MAG’s 1-day Crevasse Rescue Course is for climbers/skiers who are interested in learning how to travel safely as a rope team in glaciated terrain and perform a basic crevasse rescue. The course will cover glacier travel, the individual components of a successful crevasse rescue system, and how to put these components together to create a successful crevasse rescue system. The majority of the course will focus on the technical components of crevasse rescue.

  • Skills Covered:

    • Overview of glacier travel

    • Roping up as a team of 2 or 3 

    • Identifying and avoiding hazards on a glacier

    • Self-arrests

    • Snow anchors

    • Applicable knots

    • Friction hitches

    • Mechanical advantages (3:1 and 5:1/6:1 hauling systems)

    • Completing a crevasse rescue

    • Experience with ice axes and crampons

    • Basic knowledge of knots and rope systems

    • Professional guiding and instruction

    • All technical equipment

    • Food, water, transport, lodging

    • Technical clothing, backpack, etc.

    • Rescue insurance

    • Trip insurance

    • Guide gratuity

    • Unforeseen expenses from circumstances outside of Montana Alpine Guides’ control
